happy birthdayOur 40th anniversary is getting closer! We are having a celebration on Wednesday 9th July from 5pm and we are all getting excited about it in the office.

We have secured a lovely venue and there will be nibbles, cake and bubbles. Many people will be participating in the event to tell the story of Survive from our humble beginnings to our current staff team of 25 staff, 10 board members and over 30 volunteers!

Anna Smith, Chief Executive at Survive said:

“It represents huge progress in our combined approach to supporting people to cope and recover from their experiences of domestic abuse that Survive is celebrating 40 years of service. We were set up by volunteers in response to women dying at the hands of their partners and former partners, so that we could provide women and children with a refuge from their abusive relationship. We now have specialist services for those at high risk, group work for women recovering from their experiences, excellent partnerships with housing, schools, the police, social care and a variety of specialist agencies and outreach work in community centres and Southmead hospital. Survive has doubled in size in the last five years. Our extensive work with children supports them when they have witnessed domestic abuse to reduce self blame and understand their experiences. Our representation on a number of forums means that we present the needs of service users directly to funders, often through supporting the attendance of service users to have a voice at these meetings. New projects in schools and Southmead hospital are now supporting us to work preventatively and break the cycle of abuse. We are truly supporting people to not only cope with, but to recover from their experiences in the long term.”

There are limited spaces left, but if you would like to come, please email us and request a place on [email protected]

Glos road cookbook resized

At the end of last month we went to visit Gloucester Road WI and were presented with a cheque from the sales of their cookbook. They raised a massive £8000 for Survive! We want to thank everyone involved and all those who supported the project.

Gillian Carson, Sustainability Manager at Survive said:

This project has exceeded our expectations bringing us both some great publicity and much needed funding to support the recovery of women from domestic abuse. We would like to thank you for all your hard work and for raising such a great amount for Survive. We would not be able to help so many without the support of groups like yourselves. As you know the money will be going towards our Freedom Programme, our group work programme for women who have experienced domestic abuse. It is a very valued part of pathway to recovery and supports women to recognise potential future abusers and recognise the effects of domestic abuse on their children. The programme also supports women to help each other and form a network of support; isolation is often a part of domestic abuse.

glos road cheque presentation 2 resizedThe Freedom programme really does transform lives. Here are some quotes from recent participants:

“I have only been attending this group for 4 weeks, but I already feel an improvement in myself. Knowledge and understanding is power! It’s great to feel safe in a group of women who’ve experienced a similar environment and not feel isolated.”

“Since coming to the group I’ve had more of an understanding of what should be ‘normal’ in a relationship. I was completely oblivious to things that could happen and now I see relationships in a whole new light.”

This group is fantastic and has really helped me with confidence and esteem issues and has given me courage and strength that I have made the right choice in life and to keep going.

This has been a long time coming but welcome to our new website. It not only looks better but it provides more responsive and up to date information for our service users, funders and everyone else who wants to find out more about what we do. When I first came into post, over four years ago, updating our website was one of my missions. Sadly, funding held us back for a long time but now it’s here I feel that we have used that time well in asking service users what they would like to see as well as ensuring there are ways to communicate with us through Face Book and Twitter.

In time, I hope we can also offer service user forums and ensure that the site also supports us to get information out about our service user newsletter launched last year. There’s certainly a great deal going on at Survive whether it is fundraising events to enjoy and attend, causes we are championing, new funding coming in or new ventures we are exploring. Within the pages you will find information on our services, ways to stay safe, information to support children affected by abuse and our commentary on regional and national policy changes. We hope you find the website useful, please tell us if you don’t and thank you to all who worked really hard to make it happen.  Happy browsing!
